Educational Leadership Policy Standards: ISLLC 2008 as adopted by the National Policy Board for Educational Administration

With funding from the Wallace Foundation, CCSSO’s Consortium on Education Leadership and the National Policy Board for Educational Administration worked together over the last two years to update the ISLLC 2008 standards and make them more relevant to today’s leadership challenges. The Education Leadership Policy Standards reflect new research and lessons learned that identifies the influence of leaders on school improvement and student achievement. State policymakers can use the standards to set policies and guidelines for preparation, professional development, licensure and to develop assessments that more accurately measure and evaluate leader performance. This document discusses the role that the ISLLC 2008 standards can play in helping education leaders raise student achievement and outlines the differences between ISLLC 2008 and the original standards. The research base for the standards and specific activities that can be guided by ISLLC 2008 are also included in the document.
