School Improvement Coaches
Click here to view the handout.
The goal of the school improvement coaches is to build the capacity of building level administrators and other leaders to make decisions, based on data, that directly impact the achievement of all of their students. The principal's job is so complex these days that teacher leaders are ever more important in the school improvement planning process and focused decision making.

Providence will share information about the use of its Elementary and Secondary Support teams. These teams, consisting of support team directors, principal coaches, central staff personnel, union representatives, and other district support staff as appropriate, provide support for principals in schools identified by the state or the superintendent as in need of substantial support or intervention. The teams provide immediate support in such areas as schedule building, student accounting, supervision, data analysis and budgeting, as well as long-term support in areas such as strategic planning, school community relations, professional development, and instructional leadership. A secondary support team has been involved with one of the district’s high schools since the first day for teachers, and has been instrumental in supporting the school’s in transformation from a large comprehensive high school to three small learning communities.

Can you lead and reshape the school’s culture and increase student achievement? That is the critical question asked of all prospective candidates. Housed at Illinois State University, IL-SAELP is focused on statewide strategies designed to reduce the bureaucracy that impacts school leaders' flexibility and capacity to lead and to stimulate administrative preparation and professional development programs geared towards instructional leadership and data driven decision making. A ten member Executive Committee, chaired by Dr. Stanley O. Ikenberry, President Emeritus of the University of Illinois and the American Council on Education (ACE), provides a sounding board to IL-SAELP staff and its consortium members, a working group made up of approximately sixty members representing education and business leaders, policymakers, practitioners, and researchers from across the state.
