Between 1990 and 2000, the Lila Wallace-Reader's Digest Fund awarded more than $9 million to an exceptional group of poets, playwrights, novelists and nonfiction writers. They have conducted workshops, organized performances, given readings in homeless shelters and hospitals. These experiences shed new light on the value of community engagment and the ways in which being connected to people can feed the creative process.
