Adults who want to learn to read must remain in a literacy program long enough to see its benefits. What keeps them coming back? This report from MDRC, the first of four that explore how public-library literacy programs can foster “learner persistence,” suggests promising strategies such as providing child care and transportation and using an adult-oriented curriculum. It also profiles the five city libraries in Wallace’s Literacy in Libraries Across America initiative that tested how well these strategies work in helping adults meet their literacy goals.
