Mutually open and candid grantee relationships are essential to The Wallace Foundation’s goal of achieving broad impact in the fields it is engaged with. To build on the strengths and identify and address the shortcomings in those relationships, Wallace has engaged the Center for Effective Philanthropy (CEP) since 2004 to conduct periodic surveys of its grantees to gauge their satisfaction on a wide range of issues. Among them: the clarity of communications about goals and strategies; understanding of and overall impact on grantees’ field; quality of interactions; and assistance securing funding from other sources. In this case study, CEP describes the survey findings, the actions taken and the lessons learned by the foundation as it has sought to build on the strengths of its grantee relationships and address areas in need of improvement.
