Extended-service schools go beyond the traditional academic day to provide services for children, families and community members during non-school hours. This report, based on lessons from Wallace’s Extended-Service Schools initiative, reviews the practical issues involved in starting and operating these programs, such as planning, staffing, space and maintenance, student recruitment, transportation and financing. People who are starting extended-service schools and potential program participants can learn how such programs can produce healthy school-community partnerships and safe and productive out-of-school time.
