America’s Innovative Mayors: David N. Cicilline
Governing
This article describes the work of Providence Mayor David N. Cicilline, who has made youth issues the cornerstone of his administration. Recognizing that children between the ages of 12 and 19 are the most vulnerable to falling victim to crime, drugs, and gangs, Cicilline has worked with local organizations to develop out-of-school time programs for middle school children. With help from The Wallace Foundation, Mayor Cicilline’s administration has created more than 50 educational, cultural, and athletic activities for the city’s middle school children. Providence recently claimed a spot on America’s Promise Alliance’s list of the 100 Best Communities for Young People in the US.
