Libraries can provide a vital services for teenagers and young adults at a time when many are at risk of becoming part of “the disconnected” – the 3.8 million people, aged 18-24, who are neither in school nor employed. Studies show most of these young people begin to fall behind in middle school. To prevent more students from faltering, the Library Journal article argues that libraries should implement programs that target middle school students. As a source of knowledge, the article suggests that librarians should consult the 1999 Wallace Foundation report titled Public Libraries as Partners in Youth Development, a study that showcases examples of effective ways libraries can serve youth.
