The Queens (New York) Library has won the Library of the Year 2009 award from Library Journal in recognition of its “massive and excellent programs” and “incredibly high levels of use.” Serving what is arguably the nation’s most diverse community, a New York City borough where 2.3 million people live and 160 different languages are spoken, the Library provides some 23,000 free educational, cultural and entertainment services a year. Among them is a program, established with Wallace support, that offers children homework help and after-school enrichment throughout the school year. The Library’s “sustained commitment to library service that truly improves the lives of everyone in the borough is what makes the Queens Library so strong,” said Library Journal Editor-at-Large, John N. Berry III.
