Over summer, many kids forget some of what they learned during the school year. But “summer slide” is particularly steep for low-income youth and a leading cause of the achievement gap between them and more affluent students. Fortunately, some high-quality programs have been shown to reduce that loss. And some cities and states are taking steps to start to help.
