It is no longer enough for principals to be good building managers. Today, principals are held responsible for leading instruction and improving student achievement. While this shift puts principals in a unique position to transform schools, they must have more time for instruction in order to be effective. School leaders want to be more involved in leading instructional improvement, but studies show that principals – even those in the highest performing schools – spend up to 75 percent of their time on management.
The national School Administration Manager (SAM) Project, funded by Wallace, helps give principals the time and skills to focus on instruction by helping them delegate time-consuming activities involved with being a building manager to other staff members. The SAM Project is a change process as well as a statewide and districtwide change strategy.
The SAM Project has been in development for several years and is currently being piloted in school districts in nine Wallace network states. To learn more about the SAM Project, visit the links below.
