New York Profile

New York is concentrating on the troubled area of leadership for middle school mathematics, developing and implementing innovative strategies to strengthen leadership at that level. They are engaging four urban districts in the state.  Their work includes the redesign of university leadership programs, mentoring programs, resource reallocation, and other methods of improving leaders’ skills and the conditions under which they practice.

To support this initiative and other reforms in New York City, the state is developing new approaches to financial resources reallocation. These approaches, to be used as pilots for the expected funding from the fiscal equity judgment, will use research-based practices to determine how to use resources most effectively in support of improved student learning, and will train state, district and school level leaders in how to effectively allocate resources to improve student achievement.
