Schools Superintendent Joseph P. Burke has created the position of communications specialist within the School Department. School Committee Chairman Thomas M. Ashe said the position is needed to create a "fluid process to disseminate information to the schools, the public and the media." The communications specialist also would support the work of Step Up Springfield, the community-wide campaign for student proficiency and character development.
