The prospect of long hours and the responsibility of an entire school’s performance without a substantial increase in pay have not been attractive to teachers in many school districts – but not in Fort Wayne Community Schools (FWCS).
Of the eight new principals hired by FWCS this year, six came from within the ranks after having gone through the district’s administrative internship program. And of the 20 employees who have gone through the internship program since 2000, 16 still work in the district with 12 moving into principal or assistant principal roles.
“I think it’s a great program,” said Steve Heck, executive director of the Indiana Association of School Principals. “The grow-your-own concept is becoming more and more of a strategy.”
