NEW ORLEANS — University of New Orleans will receive a three-year $750,000 grant from the Wallace Foundation to develop and support the Louisiana Educational Leaders Network.
Louisiana had been recently awarded a one-year grant to improve the training and working conditions of educational leaders in ways that result in better learning for all children, especially those with the greatest needs. This grant is renewable for up to two additional years, based on evidence of progress, for a total of up to $3.6 million. Louisiana is one of six states, along with Arizona, New Mexico, New York, Ohio, and Texas, to be awarded a grant.
Dr. James Meza, Dean of the College of Education and Human Development at UNO, said the university will develop an intensive master’s degree level leadership program. “Our goal, through this grant initiative, is to place 20 new administrators in Orleans Parish schools by the end of next year 2005-2006," he said.
The funds have been awarded to Gov. Kathleen Blanco. This is a collaborative effort involving the Board of Elementary and Secondary Education/Louisiana Department of Education, Board of Regents/University System Boards, University of Louisiana System, and Governor.
