Use these short case studies to generate ideas and consider new strategies for quality OST programs in your community. These case studies were updated in January, 2009.

Program: A+ After School Program

Location: Wautoma, Wisconsin

Elementary-, middle- and high school students who attend the A+ After School Program in Wautoma, Wisconsin, receive homework help, followed by recreation and enrichment activities of the students’ choice. Read full case study

Program: Boys & Girls Club of Hutchinson/Kids After School, Inc.

Location: Reno County, Kansas

What began as a small after-school initiative for children in rural Reno County, Kansas is now a program serving an average of 350 youth per day. Read full case study

Program: Boys & Girls Club of the Smoky Mountains

Location: Sevierville, Tennessee

Young people living in the Smoky Mountains of Tennessee have access to five types of programming at their local Boys & Girls Club: arts; education and career development; character and leadership development; health and life skills education; and sports, fitness and recreation. Program: Claremont School District Family School Connection

Location: Claremont, New Hampshire

Located in an agricultural community of about 12,000 people, the Claremont School District runs an after-school program for local children and teenagers. Read full case study

Program: The Garage

Location: Burnsville, Minnesota
Cost: $325,000 (2009 fiscal year budget)

Teens are the driving force behind The Garage, a program of after-school, weekend and summer activities housed in a 6,000-square-foot onetime maintenance facility for the city of Burnsville, Minnesota. Read full case study

Program:  Heads Up

Location: Washington, D.C.

The Heads Up afterschool program provides low-income, “high potential” students from some of the lowest-performing schools in Washington, D.C. the opportunity to learn individually or in small groups with dedicated tutors. Read full case study
