From 1997 to 2002, Wallace supported collaborations that led to 57 schools opening their doors to programming for low-income youngsters during non-school hours. This evaluation, of the first year, finds that the programs showed promise in engaging children and teens in constructive social, recreational and academic activities. Programs encountered difficulties, however, in finding adequate space, transportation and other resources.
