Building Stronger Nonprofits Through Better Financial Management: Early Efforts in 26 Youth-Serving Organizations

Weak financial management hinders many nonprofits, including after-school organizations. This study examines the early part of a Wallace Foundation project to help build the financial muscle of leading Chicago after-school providers and reports they are making “encouraging progress.” It also finds that providers need to master three skills: understanding the full cost of programs, monitoring program finances, and meeting expenses promptly.
