Report Hails Providence for “Innovative” After-School Effort

A new report by the National League of Cities highlights a Wallace-supported out-of-school time (OST) effort in Providence, Rhode Island, describing it as “one of the nation’s most innovative city programs for children and families,” in the words of The Providence Journal. The OST initiative has established hubs of activities known as AfterZones for middle-school-age children, a group for which high quality OST programming is often lacking. One of 32 programs nationwide cited as “’truly one of a kind,’” the AfterZone effort attracted attention because of how it coordinates already-existing neighborhood programs to make them better available to young people, the article quotes League executive director Clifford M. Johnson as saying.
