Will Miller, president of The Wallace Foundation, welcomes representatives of five states – Nebraska, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee and Wisconsin – to the first meeting of a learning community focused on helping states use the Every Student Succeeds Act as a means to strengthen school leadership in their states. He reviews the foundation’s approach to policy engagement, key evidence on leadership, and the goals of the learning community. The community is a partnership of the Council of Chief State School Officers, the Council of the Great City Schools, the National Urban League, and The Wallace Foundation.

This July 29 letter was sent to U.S. Secretary of Education John King by the American Association of Colleges of Teacher Education; AASA, the School Superintendents Association; the George W. Bush Institute; the National Association of Elementary School Principals; the National Association of Secondary School Principals; the NYC Leadership Academy; New Leaders; the National Institute for School Leadership; the National Urban League; the University Council for Educational Administration; and The Wallace Foundation. It urges Secretary King to clarify the eligible uses of ESSA funds to support principals and other school leaders as an essential strategy to improve low-performing schools.

This May 25 letter was sent to U.S. Secretary John King by AASA, the School Superintendents Association (AASA), the Council of Chief State School Officers, and The Wallace Foundation (Wallace). It encourages the U.S. Department of Education to consider issuing guidance to further clarify provisions of Title II.

It urges Secretary King to make issuing specific guidance for addressing principals and other school leaders under ESSA a high priority.
