This report summarizes a study of the Higher Achievement afterschool and summer program for middle schoolers. Using random assignment, the most rigorous design, the study found, among other things, that participants outperformed peers in matriculation at private high schools, but not at competitive public charter or magnet schools. Participants also out-paced peers in math and reading, although the edge in reading was not sustained after four years. The size of the gains was substantial compared with that reported in other afterschool studies, but not as large as those seen in evaluations of some more expensive, comprehensive whole-school reforms.
