Implementation Tips

  • Given the importance of teaching artists, organizations might look at hiring both early career teaching artists and professional teaching artists practicing in the field, so that students are exposed to working artists.
  • If possible, pay teaching artists as content specialists to retain them.
  • Identify partners in specific arts industries and the community that can help the organization address shortages in arts materials, arts spaces, and teaching artists.
  • Try to give students access to at least one high-quality art studio if the organization is resource-strapped or, if possible, lean on art spaces already in the community or schools.

More tips on implementation and promising practices are included in the “Spotlight” section of this report, pages 23 through 40.
