Implementation Tips

  • Focus on the quality of arts programs to retain students.
  • Make art visible and valued to increase student recruitment.
  • Offer more than one strategy to engage students in the arts.
  • It’s okay to challenge youth and have high expectations, if support and mentorship are offered.
  • Work with parents to boost student attendance.
  • Identify when students are “sparked” by art and offer mentorship when it happens.
  • Since attracting and retaining youth requires funding, it is helpful to locate policymakers and funders who can support arts programs.
