Implementation Tips

Guidance includes:

Early planning. To run a smoother program with fewer logistical problems, begin planning for the coming summer no later than January.  Directors should allocate at least half of their time to the planning and operation of the program well before it launches.

Ideal scheduling. Operate the program for five to six weeks with three to four hours of academics each day.

Clear policies. Establish a firm enrollment deadline and clear attendance policy for parents and students. And develop a clear, positive message about the goals and culture of the program.

Curriculum development. If purchasing a curriculum, adapt it to fit student needs and time available. When developing a curriculum, work with district experts and start early.

Experienced teachers. Hire teachers who have grade-level and subject matter experience.

Behavior management. Train enrichment instructors in behavior management.

Additionally, The Summer Learning Toolkit provides evidence-based, hands-on tools and guidance for delivering effective programs, including a sample program calendar.
